The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) condemns in its entirety the incessant attacks on students of Gateway Polytechnic, Sapaade, Ogun State, stating that they will no longer be tolerated.
It is recalled that on December 2, 2023, a student of Gateway Polytechnic, Ogun State, was shot dead and nine others sustained various degrees of injuries by suspected hoodlums and criminal elements.
Reacting to the incident in a statement, President-elect of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Comrade Lucky Emonefe, stated that one student was killed, and about nine others sustained bullet injuries.
He also noted in the statement that several female students were sexually assaulted, defiled, and properties worth millions of naira were destroyed.
According to him, “this is one too many incidents from the same school and community. It will no longer be tolerated from any criminal element whose aim is to frustrate, attack, harass, embarrass, molest, assault, rape, defile, maim and/or even kill the Nigerian students’ dream.
“I therefore call on the Inspector General of Police, the Commissioner of Police of Ogun State and other Security Agencies in and around the state to double their efforts and men to curb and fish out these criminal elements, and if they be found wanting, should be seriously dealt with in accordance with the laws of the land.
“That is the only way to redeem the image of the already battered Police and other Security Agencies of the land, and this will in turn rejuvenate the confidence reposed on them”.
He appealed to the students of the Gateway Polytechnic to maintain decorum and status quo for the now, to allow the Police and other Security Agencies to do their job of ensuring that these criminal elements are brought to justice, and peace finally restored to Ode, Ipara, Isara and Sapaade communities of Ogun State.
