The leading aspirant for the November 6 Anambra governorship election, Senator Uche Ekwunife, has stated that menstrual education is key to maintaining good reproductive health. She said this during a one day symposium organized by Creative Ladies Global Resources, a community based menstrual awareness and hygiene education organization.

Menstrual Hygiene Day is an annual awareness day on May 28 to highlight the importance of good menstrual hygiene management at a global level.

Speaking at the event, Senator Ekwunife appreciated the efforts of the Creative Ladies Global Resources led by Hon Engr Maureen Okolieukwu. She said that the need for menstrual education cannot be over-emphasized, calling on the government, schools and various stakeholders to make menstrual education an integral part of their programmes.

Acknowledging the theme of the year’s awareness, “Action and Investment in Menstrual Hygiene and Health”, Ekwunife noted the need for actionable steps to be taken to ensure that beyond creating awareness on menstrual hygiene, efforts are made to provide access to menstrual kits and sanitary pads to women, particularly the girl-child. She donated reusable sanitary pads to students through the organization.

Meanwhile, research has shown that hygiene-related practices of women during menstruation are of considerable importance, as it may increase vulnerability to Reproductive Tract Infections (RTIs). Poor menstrual hygiene is one of the major reasons for the high prevalence of these tract infections in the country and contributes significantly to female morbidity.

Ekwunife was represented at the event which was held at Emmaus House Awka by her Legislative Assistant, Hon Ify Chinwuko.
